Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Acne
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a new treatment available, which utilizes blue light to help control inflammatory acne and the marks that it leaves. It has had remarkable results for those who suffer from adolescent or adult acne. The treatment is painless and takes less than an hour to perform. Photodynamic Therapy actually eliminates the bacteria that causes acne. When the skin is exposed to PDT, the light enters the sebaceous glands that harbor the bacteria. In turn, the blue light creates toxic oxygen molecules within the acne-causing bacteria that then destroy the bacteria and helps the healing process. With the bacteria gone, the acne begins to clear up and the skin begins to heal. This modality provides another treatment course for those with resistant acne.

Photodynamic Therapy For Pre-Cancerous Lesions
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an effective treatment for pre-cancerous lesions on the skin known also as actinic keratoses. Actinic keratoses are rough, scaly patches on the skin caused by excessive exposure to the sun. Left untreated, they can eventually develop into skin cancers. PDT is an innovative and easy treatment for these lesions.

The first step in the treatment is the application of a photosensitizing medication called levulan. The levulan is selectively absorbed by pre-cancerous and cancerous skin cells, and makes them more sensitive to light. After waiting an appropriate amount of time for the levulan to be absorbed (actual time will vary but can be up to 2 hours), the treatment area is exposed to a Blue Light (BLU-U) for a short time, which activates the levulan, and destroys the targeted lesions. It is very important to avoid exposure to bright light and/or direct sunlight during the 48 hours after the treatment. The results of the treatment are often maintained for many years if careful sun protection is followed thereafter.
